What to look for in new windows

When you decide to invest in new windows for your home there are many features to choose from and product lines from each window manufacturer. Below we have listed a few of the most important features to look for in our opinion. If contacting multiple companies for estimates on your windows be sure you find out which line of windows they are quoting a price on. For instance, you would not want pay for high end windows and receive the manufacturers economy line windows. This is why it is crucial to take your time and learn a little bit about windows so you can make an informed decision.

1. Low e glass

Low-E coating reduces damaging ultra-violet light and temperature transmission.

2. Argon Gas

Argon gas fill between window panes resists temperature transfer. It adds an additional 1.67 R value to the window versus windows filled with air.

3. Vinyl Windows

Maintains their appearance over a lifetime plus vinyl is not a thermal conductor. Vinyl windows are easy to clean with the tilt-in feature that comes standard on every double hung window we install.

4. Warranty

A product is really only as good as the warranty behind it.

Polaris Windows offer a lifetime warranty on frame and sash, 30 years on the insulated glass, and the warranty can be transferred one time.

Pella Windows also offers a lifetime warranty on their frames and sashes plus a 20-year warranty on the insulated gas.

Warranties are always subject to change by companies and vary by product lines also. The more economical windows of any window brand are not going to offer as good of a warranty as they would on their superior line of windows.

Hidden Dangers of Old Windows

Let’s protect the lookers. You know the ones. They sit awaiting our return each day. Little pawprints on the windowsills and tiny handprints on the glass. They greet us with enthusiasm day in and out with excited barks and giggling squeals. How do they even know we are on our street before we pull into the drive? We lock up toxins, install safety gates, and ensure our cabinets have child safety locks. But what about our windows? Older windows can pose many risks to our furry and smallest family members. All the ones that love to watch and wait on us.

Windows have the highest levels of lead in paint of any building component, lead paint chips are common in old window troughs, and friction surfaces on old windows. Lead-based paint on windows can pose a health risk to occupants, especially children and pets. Lead dust from old windows can be ingested or inhaled, leading to lead poisoning. Even opening and closing windows can generate enough lead dust to poison children, decades after the paint was applied. Lead based paint was banned in 1978, but many homes still have this paint in place today. We can test for lead and take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of your home for many decades to come.

A sure sign it’s time to have windows replaced is when the mechanical components start to fail. Sticky windows that have to be yanked roughly to open, or windows that need “propped open” to stay open. This can lead to shattering glass, broken little fingers, and much more.

This is pretty explanatory. We all need windows that lock. Or what if they problem is a window won’t unlock? Either way, it poses a major risk. Between keeping the loved ones inside safe from those on the outside but also allowing loved ones to get outside quickly in an emergency.

Old windows are likely to let excess moisture into your home. All of that unnecessary water will raise the risk of developing mold issues. Mold growth can be harmful to people with breathing difficulties or allergies, and can cause infections, irritations, asthma, and other health problems. Poor seals, framing materials, and condensation from old windows can all contribute to right environment for mold growth.

This list is just a starter on the potential safety issues with older windows, The benefits of new window installation go well beyond energy efficiency.

Things to consider when purchasing new doors

A successful home improvement project starts with research and planning. Below are some important things to keep in mind when shopping for new doors. I personally like to meet with clients to discuss their goals and find what works best for their home and budget. Depending on the project, I often bring samples of materials, colors, and hardware to help visualize how each option will look and feel in your space.

1. Longevity

When choosing new doors, think about how well they’ll stand up over time. Exterior doors in Northeast Ohio face years of sun, snow, and humidity, so selecting durable materials is key. Look for doors with weather-resistant finishes, solid cores, and quality seals to keep drafts and moisture out. Our team can evaluate your current doors and help you decide which replacements will add lasting protection and value to your home.

2. Efficiency

A beautiful door should do more than look good—it should also work hard to save you money. Energy-efficient doors are built with insulated cores, weatherstripping, and low-emissivity glass (for doors with windows) to help stabilize your home’s temperature year-round. Replacing older or poorly sealed doors can make a noticeable difference in comfort and utility costs.

3. Style & Function

Your doors play a major role in how your home looks and functions every day. From classic steel or fiberglass entry doors to sliding patio doors, French doors, and modern full-light styles, there are endless ways to match your home’s design. Think about how your door opens and the space it connects—front entry, patio, garage access, or even between rooms. We’ll help you balance beauty, durability, and practicality.

4. Curb Appeal

Few upgrades transform a home’s appearance faster than a new front door. It’s often the first thing guests and neighbors notice. A fresh, well-designed entry door can instantly update your home’s look and even boost resale value. We offer high-quality doors in a wide range of colors, materials, and glass styles—plus Rob can customize trim, stain, or hardware details to make your entryway truly one-of-a-kind.
