Hidden Dangers of Old Windows
Let’s protect the lookers. You know the ones. They sit awaiting our return each day. Little pawprints on the windowsills and tiny handprints on the glass. They greet us with enthusiasm day in and out with excited barks and giggling squeals. How do they even know we are on our street before we pull into the drive? We lock up toxins, install safety gates, and ensure our cabinets have child safety locks. But what about our windows? Older windows can pose many risks to our furry and smallest family members. All the ones that love to watch and wait on us.
Lead Based Paint
Windows have the highest levels of lead in paint of any building component, lead paint chips are common in old window troughs, and friction surfaces on old windows. Lead-based paint on windows can pose a health risk to occupants, especially children and pets. Lead dust from old windows can be ingested or inhaled, leading to lead poisoning. Even opening and closing windows can generate enough lead dust to poison children, decades after the paint was applied. Lead based paint was banned in 1978, but many homes still have this paint in place today. We can test for lead and take the proper precautions to ensure the safety of your home for many decades to come.
Failing Operating Mechanisms
A sure sign it’s time to have windows replaced is when the mechanical components start to fail. Sticky windows that have to be yanked roughly to open, or windows that need “propped open” to stay open. This can lead to shattering glass, broken little fingers, and much more.
Broken Locks
This is pretty explanatory. We all need windows that lock. Or what if they problem is a window won’t unlock? Either way, it poses a major risk. Between keeping the loved ones inside safe from those on the outside but also allowing loved ones to get outside quickly in an emergency.
Mold and Moisture
Old windows are likely to let excess moisture into your home. All of that unnecessary water will raise the risk of developing mold issues. Mold growth can be harmful to people with breathing difficulties or allergies, and can cause infections, irritations, asthma, and other health problems. Poor seals, framing materials, and condensation from old windows can all contribute to right environment for mold growth.
This list is just a starter on the potential safety issues with older windows, The benefits of new window installation go well beyond energy efficiency.
